I LOVE Jeff Tain Watts.
LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE his playing.
Such a nice combination of tradition and aggression, taste and identity, and the ability to play jazz and backbeat stuff so well. The guy can solo too. He's got the chops of the fusion guys covered in Elvin slop in such a beautiful way. Ugh.
I can't say enough.

Hey, since someone brought it up, it's very easy for me to stay humble when there's so much to learn. For example, the other night I was at the House of Blues for a buddies b-day party. By surprise, in the main room was a tribute to Coltrane. Both his sons and wife were playing with the band (very special). On drums, Jeff Tain Watts... After getting blown away as usual by him, I went up to say hello and how much of an influence he's become in mine and so many others drumming and that in (my opinion), he's the greatest jazz drummer alive now. He just smiled, shook his head and said Roy Haines.
Humbled by the humbled...
On a side note to the story, I had heard that Tain listened to a lot of diverse music and ask if it was true that he listened to Meshuggah. He replied, ?yes?.
